About the Exercise
The Staten Island Community Organizations Active in Disaster (SI COAD) coalition invites partners to join us for our 2026 tabletop exercise, a facilitated discussion-based emergency readiness activity designed to help our network think through how we would communicate, coordinate, and support community during a local emergency.
This year’s exercise comes at an important moment for SI COAD. Through our Civic Corps-supported capacity building, seasonal preparedness work, partner engagement, and communications planning, we have been deepening our understanding of the strengths, gaps, and opportunities across Staten Island’s emergency support network.
Together, we will explore how organizations can help share trusted information, identify community needs, activate resources, and coordinate with partners during both everyday emergencies and larger-scale incidents.
Who Should Attend
This exercise is open to all SI COAD members, NPSI member organizations, and community partners across sectors, including nonprofit organizations, health and human service providers, faith-based organizations, civic groups, community-based organizations, government partners, schools, cultural institutions, and other organizations connected to Staten Island communities.
Cross-sector participation is essential. Your organization does not need to have a formal emergency management role to be part of this conversation. If your team serves residents, shares information, opens its doors to community, supports vulnerable populations, or helps people navigate services, you have a role to play.
Planning to join us? Great! Click here to register by June 1st.
What to Expect
Participants will take part in a tabletop exercise facilitated by NYC DOHMH’s Community Engagement Liaison within the Community Preparedness Program. The exercise will be discussion-based; no formal emergency management experience is required. If you have any access/functional needs to support participation, please note on your registration form.
We will hold some time from 9:00 – 9:30 AM for arrival, coffee, and settling in.
The facilitated exercise will run approximately 90 minutes.
The goal is not to test individual knowledge, but to strengthen our shared understanding of how Staten Island organizations can communicate and coordinate more effectively when community needs arise.
Follow-up discussion may continue a bit past 11 AM, and space for networking will be held until 12:00 PM.
Why This Matters
SI COAD was formed to strengthen Staten Island’s community-serving organizations ability to prepare for emergencies and coordinate if and when they affect the health, safety, and well-being of our neighbors. Today, that mission includes response to and recovery from both large-scale disasters and the everyday hazards that affect community health and safety — extreme weather, power outages, public health concerns, flooding, heat, air quality, and other disruptions that require trusted, local coordination.
This exercise will help inform SI COAD’s ongoing communications planning, partner engagement, and network development so that our coalition is better prepared to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate before, during, and after the next emergency.
Please RSVP by June 1st to confirm your participation.
